Fimbul
COMING SOON Fimbul is being prepared for the App Store. This page will link to the listing when it is live.
What you need
- An iPhone with iOS 18 or later. Fimbul is iPhone-only for now; there is no iPad or Mac version.
- A camera, for scanning. You can still use Fimbul without one by storing things by hand.
- An internet connection the first time you scan a new barcode, so Fimbul can look the product up. Everything else works offline.
- Write or dictate needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence turned on. On other phones the button simply isn’t shown.
Common questions
- I scanned something by mistake.
- Tap Undo on the ribbon straight away. If the ribbon has gone, open the product and take the package out. If the product itself is wrong, use Delete product at the bottom of its screen.
- The product name from the lookup is wrong.
- Open the product and tap its name to edit it. Your name is kept from then on.
- I’m offline. Can I still scan?
- Yes. Barcodes you have scanned before work as normal. For a new barcode, type a name on the No answer card and store it. Fimbul looks the barcode up again the next time you scan it with a connection.
- Why doesn’t my full freezer count toward Preparedness?
- Because a power cut, the main thing you are preparing for, would empty it. Freezer and fridge food is shown as “+N days while power holds”. Only shelf-stable food in Pantry and Other locations counts toward the headline number.
- I moved something from the fridge to the freezer. Does its clock start over?
- No. It keeps its original stored date. Only the expected shelf life changes, to the freezer’s.
- Is the best-before date a safety limit?
- No. Fimbul’s estimate is guidance about quality, worked out from the food’s category and the kind of place it is in. Follow the package’s own instructions and your own judgement, and scan or enter the printed date when there is one.
- Where do I get Stickers?
- The app can read and bind QR Stickers, but it can’t make or print them yet. For food without a barcode, store it by hand with the + button for now.
- What’s the difference between Take out and Delete?
- Take out records that a package left your stock. It stays in your history. Delete product erases a product and all its history, and is only for correcting mistakes. It can’t be undone.
- Does Fimbul have a dark mode?
- No. Fimbul always uses its light appearance, which was designed to read well in bright kitchen light.
- Does Fimbul sync between my phones?
- Not yet. Each iPhone keeps its own record. Sync through your own iCloud is planned.
- Is anything in Fimbul paid?
- No. Fimbul is free, with no purchases in the app. Preparedness is free and will stay free.
Where the product data comes from
Product names, brands and nutrition data come from Kassalapp (Norwegian groceries) and, for barcodes Kassalapp doesn’t know, Open Food Facts. The Open Food Facts database is available under the Open Database License and its contents under the Database Contents License. The same credits, the licences and the app version are under the ℹ button in the app’s Home header.
Mund
IN THE WORKS Mund is in development and is being tried on real mandates before release.
- Mund will need an iPhone with iOS 17 or later, and is in Norwegian.
- If you are a verge and would like to test an early build, write to post@hoddmimir.no.
- Mund never submits anything to Altinn or Statsforvalteren. The export is for your own transcription.
- Please never email us a backup or an export. They contain the person’s documents, and we do not need them to help you.
Reporting a problem
Write to post@hoddmimir.no. It helps to include:
- which app, and its version (Fimbul shows it under ℹ in the Home header)
- your iPhone model and iOS version
- what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
- a screenshot, if it shows the problem
If Fimbul mis-reads a barcode or a product comes back with the wrong name, the barcode number itself is the most useful thing to send. Neither app can send us anything on its own, and we would rather it stayed that way.
